Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s final act: New $3.1B foundation bets big on science and tech

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s final philanthropic act is the creation of the Fund for Science and Technology (FFST), a new foundation supported by a $3.1 billion endowment focused on bioscience, the environment, and AI for good.

The foundation will deploy at least $500 million over the next four years, starting with $15 million in grants to Seattle research institutions including Benaroya Research Institute (BRI), Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Seattle Children’s, and University of Washington’s College of the Environment. “Our primary role is to ask big questions and have a big impact,” said Dr. Lynda Stuart, FFST’s CEO.

The new nonprofit foundation strengthens Washington’s position as a global leader in science and technology innovation.
