Paul Allen’s Ai2 to create open-source AI tools for scientists
The Allen Institute for AI in Seattle will lead a new $152 million initiative to make AI more helpful for academic researchers, marking a shift from an industry largely driven by big tech companies.
Over the next five years, Ai2 will release four models aimed at making lab work more efficient and helping researchers better understand AI systems. The National Science Foundation contributed $75 million and Nvidia contributed $77 million, with the project also involving partnerships with universities and cloud provider Cirrascale Cloud Services.
In a region already home to some of the world’s biggest tech players, this initiative highlights how Washington is also leading AI innovation through nonprofit research and open science.
