From his parents’ basement to your medicine cabinet: Absci CEO endeavors to create biotech’s Apple

Vancouver, Washington-based Absci is aiming to become the “Apple of biotech,” using generative AI to design medicines faster while building a consumer-focused pharmaceutical brand. Founded in 2011 by CEO Sean McClain, the company evolved from engineering bacteria used to manufacture antibodies into an AI-first drug developer. Its lead candidate, ABS-201, is currently in a Phase 1 trial for male pattern hair loss, with an endometriosis trial planned next.

Absci ultimately wants to commercialize its medicines independently through a direct-to-consumer model, envisioning drugs that can be continually improved with new capabilities. The company is also developing an AI “co-scientist” called Atlas to accelerate drug development and recently received a $40 million investment from Eli Lilly as part of a $100 million stock offering.
