Institute led by UW Nobel winner uses AI to build molecular scissors targeting disease proteins

Researchers at the University of Washington’s Institute for Protein Design have used AI models to develop new proteins that act like molecular scissors, targeting proteins associated with diseases such as Alzheimer’s and ALS. The technology could create new possibilities for treating diseases by breaking down harmful proteins.

Led by Nobel Prize winner David Baker, the research uses AI to design proteins that can repeatedly break down specific disease-related targets. The team is also exploring potential applications for malaria, cancer and other diseases, although more research is needed before the technology can be used in patients.

The research demonstrates how Washington’s expertise in AI and life sciences is helping scientists explore new ways to treat complex diseases.
