Seattle’s Allen Institute launches ‘moonshot’ to create new approach to cell biology research

Seattle’s Allen Institute launched a bold new initiative, CellScapes, which uses AI and mathematics to create a novel framework for understanding cellular biology.

With 75 researchers and a 10-year timeline, this project aims to redefine how scientists observe and interpret complex interactions inside cells. “This is a new way of approaching very fundamental cell biology,” said Ru Gunawardane, executive director and vice president of the Allen Institute for

Cell Science. “We want to combine math and biophysical modeling, which are things that people are doing right now, but in a siloed way in very different systems.”

With CellScapes, Washington continues to redefine the frontiers of life science research, blending computational power with biological discovery.
