UW: Anonymous $50M gift will help pay tuition for med lab science students
An anonymous Washington state donor has committed more than $50 million to cover senior-year clinical rotation tuition for University of Washington medical laboratory science students.
The gift will span 50 years and immediately fund two quarters of tuition for current seniors, amounting to roughly $8,000 to $10,000 per student. It will also support program expansion from 70 to 100 students over the next decade and fund additional instructors and training resources, addressing a nationwide and regional shortage of laboratory scientists. Students described the support as transformative, alleviating financial pressure during a period when full-time clinical rotations make outside work difficult.
By expanding access to a core clinical training program, this long-term investment strengthens the region’s pipeline of laboratory professionals and helps meet rising workforce demand.
